About the event
**Please note this class includes 3 Saturday sessions - 8/6, 8/13 and 8/20 - each Saturday from 1-4PM, plus all supplies needed to complete the class.**
This watercolor class by artist Adela McGrew is for beginners age 17+. Through demonstrations and practice, Â class members will get familiar with the medium and start painting simple subjects.
You will learn about:
- The color palette - mixing warm and cool colors.
- How to work with the water, the ratio of water to paint, and the difference between wet on wet, and wet on dry.
- Value – the color shades from dark to light used to show form. We’ll do scales of one to five in black and white studies and with colors. For practice, we’ll do studies of mountains and fruit.
- As you develop your familiarity, we’ll go on to painting simple subjects.
- Most importantly, have fun, let the colors mingle, and discover happy accidents!
The first week will start out with black and white images; the second week we'll add color, and the third week we'll work on painting simple subjects. Practice between classes is highly recommended in order to get the most out of the workshop.
All needed supplies are included in the price of the class, so grab a friend and come learn about watercolor.Â
Class size is small and limited, so each person will receive the individual attention needed.Â
About the Artist:
Meet Adela McGrew - I’m originally from Bogotá, Colombia, where I studied advertising design. My geologist husband and I moved all over the world, and it was in Egypt that I found a great teacher. Manzur Ahmed sparked my love for watercolors and established a base for oils. Since then I have taken many workshops including ones by Jerry Yarnell, George Kantoupis, Ken Hosmer, Lian Zhen, Eric Weigardt, Frank Francese, and others. Jeanne Dobie and Sue Archer both opened new doors to my work. I particularly love to paint still life scenes, pottery, landscapes, and interesting old architecture. I have won several awards from the Greater Kansas City Art Association and the Society of Watercolor Artists, where I am a signature member.
I thank my husband for not listening to me every time I get frustrated and tell him to give or throw everything away. Frustration is part of the journey but the rewards are far more meaningful. Every painting I finish is one more step to my world of beauty, and the best of all is that it is my world.
